According to the DMG, it costs gp to make a common magic item. A potion of healing in the PHB sells for 50 gp however.A potion is a magic liquid that produces its effect when imbibed.

Magic oils are similar to potions, except that oils are applied externally rather than imbibed. A potion or oil can be used only once. It can duplicate the effect of a spell of up to 3rd level that has a casting time of less than 1 minute. Potions are like spells cast upon the imbiber. The drinker of a potion is both the effective target and the caster of the effect though the potion indicates the caster level, the drinker still controls the effect. A typical potion or oil consists of 1 ounce of liquid held in a ceramic or glass vial fitted with a tight stopper.

The stoppered container is usually no more than 1 inch wide and 2 inches high. The vial has AC 13, 1 hit point, hardness 1, and a break DC of Vials hold 1 ounce of liquid. In addition to the standard methods of identification, PCs can sample from each container they find to attempt to determine the nature of the liquid inside.

An experienced character learns to identify potions by memory—for example, the last time she tasted a liquid that reminded her of almonds, it turned out to be a potion of cure moderate wounds.

Drinking a potion or applying an oil requires no special skill.

The user merely removes the stopper and swallows the potion or smears on the oil. The following rules govern potion and oil use. Drinking a potion or using an oil on an item of gear is a standard action. The potion or oil takes effect immediately.

Using a potion or oil provokes attacks of opportunity. A successful attack including grappling attacks against the character forces a Concentration check as for casting a spell. If the character fails this check, she cannot drink the potion. An enemy may direct an attack of opportunity against the potion or oil container rather than against the character. A successful attack of this sort can destroy the container. A creature must be able to swallow a potion or smear on an oil.

Because of this, incorporeal creatures cannot use potions or oils. Any corporeal creature can imbibe a potion. The potion must be swallowed. Any corporeal creature can use an oil. Likewise, it takes a full-round action to apply an oil to an unconscious creature. The caster level for a standard potion is the minimum caster level needed to cast the spell unless otherwise specified.

To activate a scroll, a spellcaster must read the spell written on it. Doing so involves several steps and conditions.

Decipher the Writing: The writing on a scroll must be deciphered before a character can use it or know exactly what spell it contains. Deciphering a scroll to determine its contents does not activate its magic unless it is a specially prepared cursed scroll. A character can decipher the writing on a scroll in advance so that he or she can proceed directly to the next step when the time comes to use the scroll. Activate the Spell: Activating a scroll requires reading the spell from the scroll.

The character must be able to see and read the writing on the scroll. Activating a scroll spell requires no material components or focus. The creator of the scroll provided these when scribing the scroll. Note that some spells are effective only when cast on an item or items. In such a case, the scroll user must provide the item when activating the spell.

Activating a scroll spell is subject to disruption just as casting a normally prepared spell would be. Using a scroll is like casting a spell for purposes of arcane spell failure chance. To have any chance of activating a scroll spell, the scroll user must meet the following requirements. Arcane spellcasters wizards, sorcerers, and bards can only use scrolls containing arcane spells, and divine spellcasters clerics, druids, paladins, and rangers can only use scrolls containing divine spells.

The type of scroll a character creates is also determined by his or her class. A natural roll of 1 always fails, whatever the modifiers. Determine Effect: A spell successfully activated from a scroll works exactly like a spell prepared and cast the normal way.

The writing for an activated spell disappears from the scroll. Scroll Mishaps: When a mishap occurs, the spell on the scroll has a reversed or harmful effect. Possible mishaps are given below. Sometime within the next 1d12 hours, the spell activates. If the scroll user was the intended recipient, the spell takes effect normally. Bag of Holding: This appears to be a common cloth sack about 2 feet by 4 feet in size. The bag of holding opens into a nondimensional space: Its inside is larger than its outside dimensions.

Regardless of what is put into the bag, it weighs a fixed amount. Carpet of Flying: This rug is able to fly through the air as if affected by an overland flight spell of unlimited duration. The size, carrying capacity, and speed of the different carpets of flying are shown on the table below.

Beautifully and intricately made, each carpet has its own command word to activate it—if the device is within voice range, the command word activates it, whether the speaker is on the rug or not. The carpet is then controlled by spoken directions. A carpet of flying can carry up to double its capacity, but doing so reduces its speed to 30 feet. It has average maneuverability, but a carpet of flying can still hover.Regarding the COV virus and its effects: Things are frustrating, and confusing, and scary.

Thread starter TrapperQ Start date Mar 20, Validated User. The magic item rules as presented in the 5th edition DMG are inconsistent, arbitrary and seem to actively discourage players from making magic items.

Potion of Speed

Compare a potion of flying to any other method of flying or look at a potion of speed - it costs 25,gp and takes a thousand days to make and only gives you haste for 1 minute. I'm going to present alternative magic item rules they will be just as inconsistent and arbitrary for potions, scrolls and general magic items.

The term 'potion' includes potions that reproduce spell effects and potions that have a unique effect and don't simply refer you to a spell description. You can also use these rules to create dusts, elixirs, ointments, oils, philtres, glues, and solvents but not bags of beans, ammunition, beads of force, candle of invocation, elemental gems, feather tokens or scrolls.

We are playing Hoard of the Dragon Queen. My PC's are only at level 3.

They stumbled into a magic shop and asked for a Bag of Holding. I made the asker roll to beat a 15 and if he did I said that he could buy one. He rolled a Magic item creation and endless tables were all I found. I ended the game about 15 minutes early to do my homework. Am I missing something? Where do I get price lists for magic items?

Or if the answer is "It's at my discretion", what should I use as a guide? Instead of using the core books to search for specific items, I recommend using one of the SRD websites - I use 5thsrd.

Default 5e assumes that "magic shops" pretty much won't exist, and even goes on to suggest that potions and the like be bought at alchemist's shops instead. Unless you decide your campaign works otherwise, most magic items are so rare that they aren't available for purchase. If your campaign allows for trade in magic items, rarity can also help you set prices for them.

As the DM, you determine the value of an individual magic item based on its rarity.

Suggested values are provided in the Magic Item Rarity table. The Bag of Holding is an uncommon item, therefore in the - GP range. At this point, it is at your discretion. Together, the:. As a side note, having your party find that Bag of Holding in some dusty and forgotten attic is also more rewarding than just stopping by the local Bags of Holding R Us and grabbing a few!

As previous answers have suggested, magic item prices are broadly at your discression, with suggested prices by rarity provided DMG pg. However, there is quite a convincing argument that some of the rarities are either too low or too high, possibly leading to very powerful items being too common, and therefore too cheap if you allow them to be bought.

To this end you may want to look at a magic item power guide such as this one on the 'Tribality' website and the so called ' Sane Magic Item Prices ' forum post on 'Giant in the Playground'.
